Hale Ke Iki Beach house rules

Aloha & Welcome!

“Your island home away from home.”

About our home:

We hope you enjoy staying at our home. This house is newly constructed (completed in March 2010). It was designed to take full advantage of Hawaii’s natural air conditioning, the trade winds. So open the windows and let the beautiful fresh Hawaiian air and the aroma of flowers draft through your little corner of paradise. This is a residential neighborhood so we ask that you respect the privacy of our neighbors and maintain the area’s peaceful, quiet ambiance. No loud noise after 10pm and absolutely NO PARTIES allowed.

Check In

Check in time is after 4:00 p.m.

Check out time is no later than 10:00 a.m.

Other Residents

You may hear some clicking noises at night. These are the sounds of our resident geckos (lizards). Geckos live everywhere throughout our Islands. You may see them outside or occasionally in the house. Geckos are small and harmless. In fact, they are a welcome guest since they eat unwanted insects.

There is also the possibility that you may have some unwelcome guests. People are not the only ones that enjoy Hawaii’s tropical climate. Various insects thrive here. Try as we may, we cannot always prevent them from entering our homes. To discourage them from entering the house it is advisable not to leave any unsealed food or crumbs on tables or counters.

If you should happen to see a cockroach, it is proper procedure to smack it with a newspaper, rolled up magazine or your rubber sandal. The good news: there are no snakes in Hawaii.

Parking

NO PARKING OUTSIDE THE GATE. Please close it behind you when you come in or leave the house. Two keypads are located by the mailbox and  one inside on the first cement pillar to the left of driveway.  No parking in front or within 15 feet behind of the gate. Swing gate will hit you or your car if you park too close.

Beach Access

Ke Iki beach is just to the right side of the house. There is a walking path and man-gate to far right side of the house. Please rinse sand off using the outdoor shower or hose before entering the house.

Getting Around

Haleiwa Town, the closest town, is a 10 minute drive from here. There are many shops and restaurants there. For your grocery shopping, Foodland is just two blocks away. Turn right when you head out to Kamehameha Highway. Foodland is on the left side at the first traffic light, across from the fire station. It is probably a 3 minute walk if you want to take you time and look around the neighborhood.

Shoes

It is customary in Hawaii to leave your shoes outside the door when you enter someone’s house. You can visit Foodland and purchase cheap ($5) rubber slippers aka flip-flops/thongs for wearing only inside. You may want to buy an extra pair to wear to the beach and elsewhere like the locals do.

Septic Tank

Waste water flows from the house to the septic tank. The tank is designed to retain waste water and allow heavy solids to settle to the bottom. These solids are partially decomposed by bacteria to form sludge. Grease and light particles float, forming a layer of scum on top of the waste water. Baffles installed at the inlet and outlet of the tank to help prevent scum and solids from escaping.

  • Do not overload the system. This is the primary cause of system failures. Early morning and bedtime are peak water use times in the bathroom. Run dishwashers and washing machines at other times of the day. Do not do all the family laundry in one day.

  • Do not dump coffee grounds in the sink. Increasing the load of solids into the tank decreases the capacity and shortens the interval between pumpings.

  • Do not pour fats and oils down the drain. They can build up and clog the septic tank pipes.

  • Do not put paper towels, tissue, cigarette butts, disposable diapers, sanitary napkins, tampons and other rubbish to the toilet.

Smoking

This is a Non Smoking Residence. We don’t smoke in our home and ask that you don’t either. You may smoke outside, however we ask that you do so responsibly.

If you smoke on the beach, please take your cigarette butts with your. When they make their way into the ocean turtles or fish eat them and get very sick.

Kitchen

Please don’t leave any food out and wipe the counters to avoid attracting bugs. Cleanser, dishwasher detergent etc. are located under the sink. Hand wash dish soap is in the dispenser under or next to the sink. Please make sure the wastebaskets are lined with plastic bags. We recycle the grocery store bags, cans and bottles. Please place cans and bottles in the yellow/green square bins by the front door downstairs. When the trash bag is full, tie it up and place in the light blue large rubbish container by the entrance gate.

Laundry Room

Washer and dryer are available for your use. Please don’t overload and remember to clean the lint screen (in the front of the dryer inside the door) before each load.

Bathrooms

Each bathroom has 2 spare rolls of paper. Additional paper is available for purchase at Foodland.

Windows

Please close the windows if you leave or are not in the room. An open window left unmonitored could cause serious water damage during a heavy rain.

TV

The TV comes with only internet connection. Please be courteous with your neighbors. No loud music after 9:00 PM.

Trash Pickup

Trash pickup is Tuesday and Friday morning. Please put trash out  Monday and Thursday evening. Please place all recyclable cans and glass bottles in bags before putting in yellow/green square container. Don’t put recyclables out on curb. We will take the recyclables to recycling center ourselves.
